Skiing in Ischgl

The high altitude, snow sure village of Ischgl has the finest lift system in all of Austria and perhaps the whole of Europe. It is undoubtedly, along with St Anton, one of the best ski resorts in Austria and has been voted among the top  ten in Europe.

Ischgl is a typical Tirolean village with over 230 km of prepared pistes which it shares with the duty free village of Samnaun in Switzerland. The ski area is ideally suited to intermediate level skiing abilities. There are a few black pistes and abundant off piste opportunities to suit advanced skiers.

Many writers consider Ischgl not to be suitable for beginners but we don't concur with this view. While it can not compare as a beginners resort with, say Cervinia, the guarantee of snow is much better than beginners villages like Alpbach, St Johan or Westendorf and it is, we feel, well suited to a group of skiers of mixed abilities because the beginner slopes are all in the main ski area of Idalp, making it possible for a group of mixed abilities to meet up at lunch times and join in the apres-ski that starts on the mountain. In many villages the nursery slopes are in the village in the valley, while the main ski area is at the top of the mountain.

When it comes to Apres-ski there are few resorts to compare with Ischgl. It starts early in the day in the mountain restaurants and extending down to the pubs to be found at the end of the si runs or the gondola bases.
